Go by your usual trouser waist measurement; the strap arrives already cut to it. From there the ratchet track gives roughly an inch of extra play in both directions, covering normal weight shifts without needing a new belt. Pick the bigger size if you're stuck between two.
Top-grain cowhide, a dense outer layer of the hide that resists stretching and takes a smooth finish well. It's cut as one continuous piece rather than joined sections, and the HC mark is press-embossed near the tail. Expect a light patina to build with regular wear over time.
