Your regular trouser waist size; the leather comes pre-cut to that measurement. A hidden ratchet track then adds close to an inch of fine adjustment beyond it, so the fit isn't locked to a single point. When torn between sizes, the larger one leaves comfortable room to tighten.
It's an open rectangular frame in a dark, matte gunmetal finish rather than a shiny polished plate, which keeps the hardware understated next to tailored trousers. The clean geometry avoids the flash of a bright buckle. HC's logo is laser-engraved into the frame, zinc alloy underneath.
