The clip section opens to accept the end of your strap and closes to grip it permanently, while the pin stays free on its hinge to fasten the belt day to day. Once the clip is set, using the buckle works just like a standard prong buckle.
This buckle is built for 1.15 inch straps, which suits a slimmer dress belt rather than a wider casual one. Check that your strap matches this width, since the clip and frame are sized specifically for that narrower fit, and a wider strap will not sit correctly inside the clip.
