The clip half fixes permanently onto one end of your leather strap, while the pin sits on a hinge at the front. To fasten the belt, you pass the pin through a hole in the strap, the same way a traditional prong buckle works. The clip just gives it a secure, fixed base.
It is built for 1.15 inch straps, a narrower width suited to slimmer dress belts rather than a wide casual strap. Make sure your strap is cut to that width before attaching the clip, since a wider strap will not seat properly inside the frame.
Slide the end of your strap into the clip section and press it closed so the clip grips the leather firmly, which is usually a one-time step since the clip is meant to stay fixed. Once that is done, the pin is free to swing and fasten through the strap holes as normal.
It has a silver-toned metal finish over a durable base, built to resist everyday scuffing. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth after wear, keep it away from harsh chemicals and standing water, and store it somewhere dry so the finish stays even instead of spotting or dulling over time.
