A zinc alloy core plated with a bright gold finish, chosen for its shine rather than for being solid gold. The plating is applied thick enough to resist the daily scuffing that a thinner gold wash would show within weeks.
Release the clamp at the back of the buckle, remove the old strap's cut end, and slide the replacement strap into the same channel before closing the clamp again. The gold plating isn't affected by how often you swap straps.
The plating holds up well under normal daily wear, but any plated finish will eventually show light wear at the edges after years of use. Keeping it dry and wiped down slows that process considerably.
